MEET SOME OF IRELAND'S MOST NOTORIOUS CHARACTERS
Welcome to one of Ireland's best and most interactive experiences. On entering the building, you will be transported back in time and meet face-to-face with some of the most notorious characters to have walked the floors of this dramatic and history filled building. As you travel back in time, you are entering one of the cruellest, most historically shameful places in Ireland.
Actors in full regalia invite visitors to enter the cells of prisoners past and board the replica transportation ship to Van Diemen's Land. The Gaol is steeped in history spanning the 1798 rebellion, the famine and prisoner transportation era right up to the Irish War of Independence and Civil War.
Wicklow Gaol is open all year round for historic tours and events with a 'ghostly' difference.
By Car: From Dublin, the Gaol is located off the main Dublin/Wexford road (N11) at Rathnew, 3km (2 miles) from Wicklow Town - at the southern end of the town beside the courthouse. From Wexford/Waterford/Cork, turn right off the N11 at the Beehive (3km / 2 miles from Wicklow Town). The Gaol is situated at the southern end of Wicklow town beside the courthouse.
By Bus or Train: For buses or trains to Wicklow Town, see www.IrishRail.ie for trains or www.BusEireann.ie for buses.
